Directions: 

  1. Listen to a professional reading Links to an external site. of this poem while following along with the poem. Links to an external site.
  2. Number the stanzas: 1-18.
  3. Mark your confusion: words you don’t understand, places where you don’t know what’s happening, etc.
  4. Paraphrase your assigned stanza. (If you're at home, paraphrase stanza 2.) 
  5. Summarize your assigned stanza.
  6. Be ready to share your stanza with the class. 
  7. SOAPSTone the poem. 

 

 Paraphrase: to restate the entire content and essential information of a text in your own words. 

When you paraphrase a text, your version will often be just as long as the original because it includes all the details that were in the original.  The best way to paraphrase is to close read, reread, and study the original passage until you fully understand the meaning.  Write your own version of the stanza, in your own words.  Maintain the point of view and tone of the original, but use ALL your own words.
