Read this passage from Night:
“Those whose numbers had been noted were standing apart, abandoned by the whole world. Some were silently weeping.”
Wiesel might have written this:
The prisoners whose numbers had been called were standing by themselves crying.
Which one is better? Notice the differences in:
Connotations- apart, abandoned, silently weeping
