Traditional Pathway Only: Night- Purpose and Tone

Read this passage from Night: 

“Those whose numbers had been noted were standing apart, abandoned by the whole world.  Some were silently weeping.” 

Wiesel might have written this: 

The prisoners whose numbers had been called were standing by themselves crying. 

Which one is better? Notice the differences in: 

Connotations- apart, abandoned, silently weeping 

Imagery 

Tone  

Formal vs. informal- seriousness  

Directions: Write and submit the following sentence with informal language.   

“What is it now?  Perhaps you think I’m lying? I’m telling you, once and for all: nothing will happen to you! Nothing! You just like to wallow in your despair, you fools!”
