Read the three sources about the journey of Fathers Dominquez and Escalante below and answer the questions. You will need to read carefully to find the right answers.
I. Encyclopedia Entry - Dominguez-Escalante Expedition
The Dominguez-Escalante Expedition was conducted in 1776 to find an overland route from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Spanish missions in California. Francisco Atansio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante, Catholic priests, and Don Bernardo Miera y Pacheco, a cartographer, traveled with eight men from Santa Fe through present day western Colorado to Utah Valley, now in the state of Utah. Along the journey they were aided by three Timanogat Ute guides. Due to hardships experienced during travel, the group did not reach Las Californias, but returned to Santa Fe through Arizona. The maps and documentation of their expedition aided future travelers. Their route became part of the Old Spanish Trail from Santa Fe.

III. Journal of Dominguez and Escalante from September 23, 1776 in Utah
...Afterward his mother brought him to where we were begging us to baptize him, and we consoled her by saying that we should soon return, when everyone, large and small, would be baptized.
...we told them that we now had only a few provisions and would be grateful if they [the Timpanogats Indians] would sell us a little dried fish. They brought it and we purchased a considerable quantity of it. All day and a part of the night they kept coming and conversing with USS, and we found them all very simple, docile, peaceful, and affectionate.
