Communication and Information
It is very important to me that we work together with your child to create the best learning environment possible. I believe that communication is key to having a successful partnership. Please let me know if you have any concerns.
The best way to reach me is my e-mail. cvanoene@dsdmail.net. If there is an emergency, please call the school office and speak with the secretary. Our school office number is (801) 402-3400. They will call into our classroom. They can also leave me a message in my box or transfer you to the voice message machine on the phone in my room. Homework
-Independent Reading: Students need to read 30 minutes every school day! Our fifth-grade reading goal is for every student to read 700 pages a term. There is an average of 45 school days in a term. If your child reads 15 pages/30 minutes every school day they will reach 675 pages! The other 25 pages may be read at school or on the weekends. If your child is consistent with their reading each night, they should have no problem reaching their 700 pages each term. Reading 700 pages a term in fifth grade will help prepare your child to achieve the required reading in junior high.
- Students should have each book they read approved by the teacher to make sure it is on their level and suitable for fifth grade. After a book is read, the student will write a report found in a form linked in their Canvas class, on the home page. Students will need to fill out this form for each book they read. The tracking will be completed through individual consultation with the student and teacher, and book reports turned in for each term. If a student is struggling earning their term reading pages, I will contact you by email or a phone call to come up with a solution to help your child be successful.
- Two weeks before the end of each term, every student will give an oral book report on one of the books they read during the term. This will ignite interest in other students to read the book and improve student listening and speaking skills. More details about the oral book reports will be forthcoming.
-Keyboarding: Students are required to keyboard 20 minutes Monday-Thursday. Students will keyboard in the computer-based program Edutype. The number of minutes typed during the week is automatically recorded in the Edutype program. Our fifth-grade goal is 25 wpm with 98-100 percent accuracy by the end of the school year! Keyboarding is a very important life skill!
Missing Assignments
If a student is absent, they have the number of days they were absent to make up the work they missed. It is so important that students complete assignments on time. There will be a 5% grade deduction every day the assignment is late. If the assignment has not been turned in after one week, the assignment grade is a zero. Accountability is key! Make Every School Day Count!
Birthdays
Birthdays are a great opportunity to celebrate each student. We will sing to them. Summer Birthday students may choose a day during the year to celebrate their birthday. Treats are not expected, nor required, however if you are thinking of sending a treat please make sure that it is commercially prepared. Non-food treats are great too.
Recess
I try not to keep student from their recess time. I believe they need the physical break.
Please make certain that your children are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions. With few exceptions, students will need to be dressed so they can go outdoors during recess and lunch times. On exceptionally cold or stormy days, students will be allowed to stay indoors. That only happens when the office directs.
SHOES/ PE
All students will participate in PE each week. Students will be required to wear shoes that stay on their feet while running. Please no flip flops. Students need to have pants or shorts to participate fully in all activities. A participation grade will be given.
Classroom Management
I have high expectations of student behavior. We will discuss those in depth the first weeks of school. Students will be expected to be respectful to their peers, to school and personal property, and to all adults in the school who work with them. This can be summed up in our rule " be respectful."
Kaysville Dragons are Responsible, Respectful, Safe, and Kind.
I believe that students need to be responsible for their actions and there are consequences for actions. Consequences for not following those rules are 1st offense is a warning, 2nd and 3rd offenses include Teacher Conference and Loss of recess or other activities. 4th offense is a think time at the principal’s office and a parent e-mail. Serious actions can result in a skipping of the offense chain.
I like to use a positive approach to discipline as much as possible. We use a plus system. They can earn bouncy balls, food and non-food treats, desk pets, a pull from the treasure box, and classroom break activities. We earn classroom points for good behavior. When we have earned enough points, we will have a class party. I will send more information when we have earned a party.
Attendance
Attendance at school is very important. State law requires all students to attend at least 93% of the school year. It is important that they attend school every day, arrive on time, and do not leave early or during the day.
Humans get ill. If your student is ill, please allow them to recuperate at home. I am a horrible judge of tummy aches, headaches, and nausea. Given our current world if they are feeling ill, they will go to the office to call home.
If your student is absent, they are responsible for missing assignments. I will help as much as possible, but it is the student's responsibility to complete their assignments.
Students should check their CANVAS page daily. They are responsible for assignments on their CANVAS page on days they are absent.
In the event of a school closure day due to weather all students are expected to attend a TEAMS meeting first part of the day and also to do the assignments that will be on their CANVAS page.

We are asking for a donation of $25 for our fourth fund. Please pay this through your MyDSD guardian account. We will be going on several field trips this year.

A donation is a fee if a student or parent is required to make a donation as a condition to the student’s participation in an activity, class, or program, as per Davis District Policy.
