Body Mass Index (BMI) is a formula that takes into account your height and weight to estimate if you are currently at a healthy weight. Because it's just an estimate, you should not make health-based decisions solely on the BMI chart. Individuals that have above or below average muscle mass will find that the BMI chart is not accurate. This website Links to an external site. will help you to calculate your BMI.
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is a formula that takes into account your age, height, weight, and sex, to estimate how many calories you use at rest. BMR is often thought of as your Metabolism. BMR is affected by muscle mass, so the more muscle mass a person has, the greater amount of calories are required. This website Links to an external site. will help you calculate your BMR. Total Energy Expenditure (TEE) - BMR is often paired with an activity multiplier, since most of us are not completely at rest all of the time. This multiplier will estimate how many calories you use at that activity level. This new number is called Total Energy Expenditure (TEE). This is also an estimate and can vary based on a variety of factors. Again, you should not make health-based decisions based solely on the BMR chart. Demonstrate Understanding
1. Calculate the BMI, BMR, and TEE for the following individuals:
- Mike: Male, 16 years old, 5'9", 130 pounds, Exercise 4-5 times/week
- Sarah: Female, 15 years old, 5'2", 115 pounds, Sedentary: little or no exercise

2. What are the two ways to lose weight when thinking about BMR and TEE?
3. Why would one method be better than the other for teens that are still growing and why/why not?
4. What is the main factor of body composition that will affect your BMI and BMR?
