Course Description (Curriculum)/Materials Needed:  This class will include instruction in a variety of sports and fitness activities.  Active participation and teamwork are essential. There is a class fee of $10. 

PROPER DRESS:

  • Clean white T-Shirt – with student’s name written on the front of the T-shirt.
  • Appropriate black shorts.
  • Proper gym shoes; flat (no heels), rubber, laced, and non-marking soled shoes.
  • Clean white gym socks are preferred. We advise the student to have separate gym socks from those worn during the school day.
  • Black, blue or gray sweats or warm-ups are optional in case of stormy weather.

UNACCEPTABLE DRESS:

  • Clothes other than white T-shirts and blue or black shorts, or sweats which are not blue, gray or black. Shirts that are sleeveless or show a bare midriff are not appropriate for P.E.  The length of shorts must meet school standards. No see through leggings. Unacceptable footwear includes: backless shoes (clogs), slippers, sandals, dress- or boot-like shoes.

PERSONAL ITEMS:

  • All students will provide their own combination locks and are always urged to keep lockers locked.
  • Students will provide their own personal toiletries such as soap, deodorant (no white stick deodorant), etc…
  • For safety reasons, glass containers are prohibited in locker room.
  • We recommend that students DO NOT bring items of value into the locker room/gym such as phones, binders, money, etc. Physical Education teachers, nor Centerville Junior High School, will be held liable for missing items.

 

Grading Policy:  Grades will be earned through equally weighted categories of in class skill development/activities/sportsmanship, weekly fitness log, skills testing, fitness testing, and three written exams per term.  Letter grades will be based on percentage of points earned.  The grade breakdown is as follows:

 100 – 94% = A

 

83 – 80% = B-

 

69 – 67% = D+

 93 – 90% = A-

 

79 – 77% = +C

 

66 – 64% = D

 89 – 87% = B+

 

76 – 74% = C

 

63 – 60% = D-

 86 – 84% = B

 

73 – 70% = C-

 

59 – 0% = F

CHEATING:  Any student who is caught cheating on a skills test or a written exam will receive a citizenship “U” for the term, and an “F” on the test. Any student who trades teams without getting permission from the teacher may also be given a “U” in citizenship.

Homework/Extra Credit- Extra credit will be given at the end of each term to students who desire to improve their grade.  Those that are interested please talk to your teacher. Students may not have any missing tests, assignments, or aerobic activity to receive extra credit. In addition, students must receive a minimum of 40% on the log book combined scores to be eligible for extra credit. 

Citizenship:  Citizenship grades will be based on tardiness and or inappropriate behavior.

Attendance/Tardy Policy/Make-Up Work: If student misses a skills test, aerobic activity or written test it MUST BE MADE UP.  Upon student request, make-up activities will be available during class. 

Attendance Policy: Points will be deducted from in class skill development/activities/sportsmanship.

0 Absences –100%

3 Absences –95%

4 Absences –90%

5 Absences -85%

6 Absences –80%

– 5% for each absence thereafter

Other information

PARTICIPATION:  All students will dress and participate daily to the best of their ability.    Students not participating will be required to complete an alternative assignment during activity time, that must be completed by the end of the period, to receive points for that day.  

PARTICIPATION POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED TO STUDENTS:

  • Who are not dressed in their proper gym clothes.
  • Who bring food and drink into the locker room and or eating food in the gym area.
  • Who are harassing or making fun of other students.
  • Who use profanity in gym class or in the locker rooms.
  • Who are talking during roll call or during instructions.
  • Who are throwing things in the locker room.
  • Who are handling the equipment without permission.
  • Who are using any glass containers in the gym or locker room.
  • Who are going on the stage without permission.
  • Who use a hall pass more than once per term.
  • Who are tardy to class.
  • Who are not lined up for roll call within 5 minutes after the tardy bell.
  • Who are continually borrowing gym clothes or shoes.
  • Who bring white stick deodorant into the locker room.
  • Who are using phones inappropriately in the locker room
  • Who are guilty of any other action considered inappropriate by the teacher.

MEDICAL EXCUSES:  Any student who has a medical problem and needs to be excused from P.E. for 1 to 2 days, must have note from a parent or guardian which includes a parent’s contact number and explanation for non-participation.  All students who have a chronic medical condition, such as asthma, diabetes, etc., need to have a medical form on file.  P.E. medical forms can be picked up at any time from the P.E. teacher.  Any student who has a medical problem and needs to be excused from P.E. for more than 2 days must obtain a doctor’s note, indicating reason for non-participation, how long activity must be limited, what the student can/cannot do and it must be signed by a physician.

 

Students who sit out for any length of time and for any medical reason are REQUIRED to make-up ALL missed work including: participation, skills tests, miles/aerobics, written tests, and log book entries (date, reason for absence and reflection).
