Circa 1500s
As Lutheranism and then other denominations cropped up in Europe, Catholicism diminished. Consider that Martin Luther began his ministry and call for reform from Wittenberg, Germany. Locate it on the map to the above. Consider that Rome was the seat of Catholicism. Locate it on the map above. Later, Calvinism took hold in Geneva, Switzerland. Locate Switzerland on the map above.
Modern Times
Nowadays, the maps look a little different. Over 100 million Protestants reside in Europe (about 16.2% of the continent's population), while 730,072,510 Catholics also live in Europe (about 37% of the continent’s population). In addition, today there are 1.2 billion Catholics in the world and 800 million Protestants in the world.

Answer the following questions in a text box, based on the maps above.
1. Circa 1500s map: Explain how the start location of Lutheranism in relation to Rome explains how the Circa 1500s map looks.
2. Catholics in the World Map: As Protestantism spread in Europe, the Catholic church sent out missionaries to spread Catholicism in the world. How is this reflected in the Catholicism in the World Map?
3. Protestants in the World Map: As you look at the map, take note that the darker areas have a higher percentage of Protestants. Which areas are mostly Protestant in the Americas (North and South America)?
