From the beginning of civilizations, people have traded goods to survive. Ancient Greece relied on trade to supplement what they could grow on their rocky peninsula. Greece's poor soil meant they relied on importing crops from other areas. And many Greek products such as pottery and olive oil became prized by other regions. With most of Ancient Greece's population living near the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the Greeks became skilled at using boats to travel to other ports.
