The Rundown:
The most common type of edit is one in which you arrange, trim, and enhance footage in a timeline. Every now and then, though, our editing needs to get a bit more complex, specifically for adding effects, creating graphics, making animations, and adding energy and excitement (such as in the case of a hype reel or promo). In these cases, editing is where the majority of our creativity comes to fruition, and its through your edit that your video will succeed and be awesome, or fall short and be mid content. Today, let's show you some advanced editing techniques, including how to animate special effects.
The Instruction:
The following video will show you my process in creating hype effect as well as other advanced techniques. Watch it as part of the assignment:
(Apologies for the sound quality in the video, I had to record this on the road at our Video competition in California).
The Requirements:
Use This File: Advanced Editing Tutorial.zip Download Advanced Editing Tutorial.zip
Inside of the zip file is is a Premiere Pro project file and some footage to go with it. Unzip the zip file (by double clicking on it in either the finder or on the desktop). Then, open the Premiere Pro project.
Within this premiere pro project, you'll find that there are four sections to the video. Each section has built-in instructions for an effect to edit into the video. Follow these instructions to create the following effects:
- Section 1: Add a "marker" to each major downbeat in the music. (Click on the music, press spacebar to play it, and hit "m" at each spot you want to create a downbeat). Then, edit the cut between clips to match to each downbeat within section 1.
- Section 2: Add three different transitions from the effects panel to the shots within these sections. Avoid adding transitions that look cheesy or unprofessional (Tip: if the transition looks like it was done in PowerPoint, it's probably better to not use it).
- Section 3: Animate a slow "push in" and "pull" effect by animating the "scale" setting in premiere pro (you'll need to animate this effect as directed by the video texts in this sections).
- Section 4: Animate the "Gaussian Blur" effect to create a personalized transition between the two videos in this section.
- Section 5: Add an effect of your choice to one (or both) of the clips and animate the effect to create either another transition or just a cool visual.
- Section 6: Cut out and remove the clips labelled "remove me" to create a strobe effect. (Use the razor tool, the left and right arrow keys, and the +/- keys to cut the clips accurately).
- Section 7: Add the "warp stabilizer" effect and set the stabilize value to "8%".
- Section 8: Don't forget to add a fade in and fade out to the beginning and end of your video.
- Optional - Section 9: For several points of extra credit, you may look up a tutorial online, such as this one Links to an external site. and apply the effect to section 9. If you do not want to do this, simply delete section 9 before exporting the video.
Once complete, export the finished video and submit it as a OneDrive drive link to this assignment.
