The Rundown:
Now that we've talked about types of audio sounds and types of microphones, let's give you an opportunity to actually record audio. For this purpose, we are going to create our own sound design for a pre-recorded scene provided below.
The Instruction:
The Requirements"
Step 1: Plan Your Sounds
Download this "High 5" scene . Then, write down a short list of 5-9 sounds or more that you could add to the scene. Be sure to add each of the following at a minimum:
- Ambient sound (i.e. recording the ambient sound in a hallway or room when no other sound is being made)
- Foley/sound effect (e.g. the "high five")
- Background sound (e.g. another classroom of students talking as our protagonists walk by)
Step 2: Record Your Sounds OR Use Online Sounds
Using a boom mic and sound recorder, capture your sounds with the following quality-control principles in mind:
- Use proper distance - whatever distance the camera will be to the sound in the scene is how far away you should record the sound
- Record in the right environment (i.e. keep reverb in mind)
- Use proper levels - make sure your levels are high enough but are not peaking
- Make sure to avoid unwanted noise in the background
- Monitor your sounds with headphones as you record them
Sound Effects:
Step 3: Edit Your Sounds and Scene
- Edit your sounds alongside your footage in Premiere Pro
- Edit the gain/volume of your sounds to sound realistic
- Fade in and fade out the sounds if needed (to make the sound less out of nowhere)
- Time your sounds to sound realistic to the footage. If needed, add effects (such as reverb, left right balance, or pitch shifters) to make your sounds realistic
Turn in your finished clip through a Onedrive link.
Alternative Project
Alternative videos if you would like to do a scene from a movie: (Note: this version might take more work since there are more sounds going on in the background. Make sure to also follow the above instructions in creating the right environment and editing.)
- Download one of these clips and recreate the sound.
- Recreate the sound for the clip you chose
- Listen to the original clip below for reference.
- Use free sound effects and music from internet.
