Reconstruction was the time period after the Civil War as the North (the victors) attempted to rebuild the South. One extreme difficulty for both sides dealt with the elimination of slavery. Questions of freedom were discussed, debated, and even fought over again. The following video gives an overview of reconstruction from the ending of the war until the Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) that determined what equality would mean for the next 60 years.
