After the Civil War, as the United States attempts to reconstruct itself back together between the North and South, more and more Americans moved West. One of the largest groups moving into the West were immigrants, motivated by jobs and land. The transcontinental railroad was to connect the east and west quickly. The Union Pacific Railroad company began in Nebraska and headed West and the Central Pacific Railroad company began in Sacramento and moved East. Immigrants, mainly Irish and Chinese, became the driving force of the railroad.
