FRCH 3117: Découvrons la Francophonie!

See additional info about grades and expectations specific to the Bridge course here Links to an external site..

Please remember that this is an upper-level French course. It is meant to be a continuation of your French journey after having successfully passed the AP test. Students will need to be organized and responsible in getting work done. No late work is accepted by the University professor and excessive absences or tardiness may result in failure of the course. Students are expected to participate and complete work thoughtfully with an aim for increasing their proficiency in both written and spoken language. Successful completion of all three years of the Bridge courses is just 2 or 3 courses away from a French minor at any of the public state universities in Utah. Successful completion of 2 years of Bridge courses will allow a student to acquire the Institutional Certificate of Proficiency in French from Weber State University.

**Please note: You must have documented passage of the AP test with a 3 or higher OR have already completed a year of Bridge class in order to enroll in this course!

 Course themes

In this course, students will explore the world of travel through the window of French and Francophone worlds, tales and heroes. Students will explore these topics through class discussions, projects, papers, and presentations.

COURSE SUPPLIES

Cloudbooks are available this year for every student who wishes to use one. Hotspots are also available if needed for Internet access. These need to be checked out through the school.

Cloudbooks checked out through the school are the student's responsibility. Students are expected to take them home and bring them to school charged. There are not extra cords for charging nor enough outlets at school for the Cloudbooks.

Students will need:
*   A device for accessing the Internet BOTH AT SCHOOL AND AT HOME: Cloudbook, tablet or personal laptop. Cellphones are not sufficient. Cloudbooks may be checked out through the school, as well as hotspots if needed. The device must have a webcam and microphoneStudents must bring it to school charged and ready.
Earbuds  with a microphone for use at school. Students may also borrow a class headset for use in class. I do not have enough to check out for home.
*   Composition Notebook (50-80 pages) for journals. Must be able to be left in the French classroom at anytime, as requested by the teacher(s)

ONLINE RESOURCES

Students will need access to several online resources:

Clever is a district single sign on platform that allows access to many different district or teacher resources with one username and password. If requested to log in, students should sign in with the same user name and password they use for Office 365. I have noted below if the resources are available through Clever.
  • Canvas Parents or students use this link . Student access also available through Clever,
  • EMC Passeport or Carnegie Learning. Access available through Clever.
  • Remind. More details for accessing Remind are below under "communication".
  • This Is Language Students will sign up in class. Information will be given in Canvas. No identifying information will be shared.
  • Talk Abroad: (Links to an external site.) We will have opportunities to speak with native French speakers using TalkAbroad - a service that connects students with native speakers they have vetted, hired and trained. Conversations are recorded and no identifying information is shared with TalkAbroad. More info for connecting will come later.

COMMUNICATION

Students are asked to copy both instructors in emails with questions about the course.
With Dr. Hatch:
Virtual Student Conference times TBA
Due to FERPA laws and university students, Dr. Wiggins is not able to discuss specifics about a student's grade or work with parents without the student present. She can answer general questions, but the majority of communication should be between the student and Dr. Wiggins.
Parents and students both are always welcome to communicate with the high school teacher and both have access to everything on Canvas. Parents will need to sign up for a parent account in order to get that Canvas access if desired.
With Mme Hall:
Remind (for texting): (see below)
Canvas Inbox
Emails and Canvas

Most communication will come through Canvas, including email reminders, due dates, announcements and special instructions. Very few emails will come through the district Encore system or Outlook. Parents are encouraged to sign up for a parent account in order to receive these communications. You can also communicate with me through your student's Canvas French Bridge course inbox.

It is essential that students check their Canvas French Bridge course Inbox regularly. (Don't use the inbox associated with this webpage.) Students can set up notifications to come to another email account if they choose. More specific instructions are given in the student's Canvas French Bridge course.

Remind (texts)

Remind is a way for parents or students to communicate with me and I with them via text without disclosing either of our phone numbers. Although most communication will be through Canvas, quick text reminders or one-on-one communication is convenient with texting.
