Français 4/5/AP Important Info and Links!

This course is a two-year rotating course intended to prepare students for the AP exam, as well as to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy available to students who achieve a score of 5 (intermediate mid) on the STAMP test OR a score of 3 on the AP test PLUS a score of at least 17 in English on the ACT test.

Each year we will cover material for all six AP themes. We will cover additional material for each of the themes the second year. At the end of the two years, students should be well-prepared for the AP exam, as well as for qualifying for the Seal of Biliteracy. Students have the option to take the AP exam after the first year, if they choose.

COURSE SUPPLIES

Cloudbooks are available this year for every student who wishes to use one. Hotspots are also available if needed for Internet access. These need to be checked out through the school.

Cloudbooks checked out through the school are the student's responsibility. Students are expected to take them home and bring them to school charged. There are not extra cords for charging nor enough outlets at school for the Cloudbooks.

Students will need:
  • A device for accessing the Internet BOTH AT SCHOOL AND AT HOME: Cloudbook, tablet or personal laptop. Cellphones are not sufficient. Cloudbooks may be checked out through the school, as well as hotspots if needed. The device must have a webcam and microphone. Students must bring it to school charged and ready.
  • Earbuds  with a microphone for use at school. Students may also borrow a USB class headset for use in class. I do not have enough to check out for home.
  • Notebook or binder (for notes and handouts)
  • Lined paper (for notes and in-class assignments)
  • 2 dry erase markers (dark colored)
  • Whiteboard eraser
  • Pen and pencil

ONLINE RESOURCES

Students will need access to several online resources:

Clever is a district single sign on platform that allows access to many different district or teacher resources with one username and password. If requested to log in, students should sign in with the same user name and password they use for Office 365. I have noted below if the resources are available through Clever.
  • Canvas Parents or students use this link . Student access also available through Clever,
  • AP Classroom (MyAP student login)
    • All students in the class will need to sign up for AP Classroom online, regardless of if they are planning to take the AP test. Instructions with the class code will be given in class and in the student's French 4/5/AP/IB Canvas course.
Students wishing to take the AP test, will need to sign up for the test within AP Classroom.
  • EMC Passeport or Carnegie Learning. Access available through Clever.
  • Students taking the AP test will have access to an AP prep book which they should study and work at throughout the school year at home.
  • Quizlet, Kahoot, Nearpod
  • Remind. More details for accessing Remind are below under "communication".
  • This Is Language More details in class. Students will sign up for my class. No identifying information is shared with This Is Language.
  • Talk Abroad: Links to an external site. We will have opportunities to speak with native French speakers using TalkAbroad - a service that connects students with native speakers they have vetted, hired and trained. Conversations are recorded and no identifying information is shared with TalkAbroad. More info for connecting will come later.

COMMUNICATION

Emails and Canvas

Most communication will come through Canvas. I will send email reminders. Due dates will be posted. Announcements and special instructions will all be through Canvas. Very few emails will come through the district Encore system or Outlook. Parents are encouraged to sign up for a parent account in order to receive these communications. You can also communicate with me through your student's Canvas French 4/5/AP/IB course inbox.

It is essential that students check their Canvas French 4/5/AP/IB course Inbox regularly. (Don't use the inbox associated with this webpage.) Students can set up notifications to come to another email account if they choose. More specific instructions are given in the student's Canvas French 4/5/AP/IB course.

You may also contact me through my district email: juhall@dsdmail.net

Remind (texts)

Remind is a way for parents or students to communicate with me and I with them via text without disclosing either of our phone numbers. Although most communication will be through Canvas, quick text reminders or one-on-one communication is convenient with texting.

CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT (CE)

(You must be enrolled in French 4 to receive CE credit. If you want both AP and CE credit, enroll in French 4. AP is more flexible and you can still take the tests and get credit. Your AP class will not appear on your transcript, but your AP score will.)

Concurrent Enrollment with Weber State University allows students to earn college credit at the same time as earning high school credit for a fraction of the normal price. After paying a one-time admission fee, students can earn this credit for a very small fee per credit (currently $15 for 3 credits of French). In French, the curriculum is the same for both students who are concurrently enrolled and those who are not, so there is no extra work involved. However, Weber State's attendance policy (and thus for CE French) is much more stringent than Bountiful High School's attendance policy (see the disclosure). Also, your grade will go on your permanent WSU transcript.

IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO BE REGISTERED FOR FRENCH CE AT BOUNTIFUL HIGH SCHOOL TO BE CONCURRENTLY ENROLLED. Although you must be registered for French CE at BHS, You must also register through Weber State University as well!  And before you can register, you have to apply for admission to WSU.
See Instructions for Weber State CE admission and registration Links to an external site. for more precise information, including documents needed and payment amount and process.

Admission deadline is Sept. 9, 2024.  Admission through WSU takes up to 3-7 days to process before you can continue on to register for the class. You may or may not receive an email confirming your acceptance. Apply early - by Sept. 1 at the latest (our class deadline) so that you can be admitted on time in case their are complications .

Once you are admitted, you can register for the class!

Registration deadline is Sept. 16, 2024 Please register by our class deadline of Sept. 8! Register for French 2010, CRN  22030

These are hard and fast deadlines set by the university. If you are late being admitted or late registering, you will not be able to take the course for credit.

Students wishing to take the AP test will have access to a copy of Barrons AP French Language and Culture to practice.
Students may also practice all task types found on the test using AP Classroom. AP review videos are also available from the site.
