COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course generates 3 credits of Weber State University Concurrent Enrollment Credit for the WSU class NTM 1700: TE Intro to Microcomputer Applications.
- The earned grade will go on an official WSU transcript.
- You must be a junior or senior to earn the credit.
- Computer Technology is a prerequisite for this class.
- This course will be fast paced, due to the quantity of information to be covered and will require hard work and dedication on the part of the student. However, you will leave this class with skills vital to success in the business world.
- Regular attendance is mandatory.
A one-time $30 WSU admittance fee is required. Once this fee has been paid, the student can take any WSU concurrent enrollment classes that LHS offers. Tuition is a $5.00 per credit fee. For this class it will by $15.00. The admittance and registration process needs to be done at home as soon as possible for students to be able to access class materials.
Students have online/cloud access to their files stored in the District OneDrive. Also available with the OneDrive is Microsoft Office 365 which is a simpler online version of the Microsoft Office software, which allows for assignments to be seen and some to be worked on online.
Microsoft Office 2016 Software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc) is available FREE to all Davis School District students. Visit the Layton High School home pagehttp://www.davis.k12.ut.us/710 and scroll down to the Microsoft Student Advantage Plan for more information. It is recommended that all students have access to this software away from school in order to stay current with assignments.
CANVAS We will be using an online tool known as Canvas to facilitate this class. Canvas is a Learning Management System designed to help students manage their assignments and communication with the teacher more efficiently. Please note, grades and scores will be current in this WSU Canvas account and only updated through MyDSD at mid-term and end of term. To follow your students progress, you will need to ask them for their username and password for the Canvas account. Once in the Canvas class, click on the "Grades" link on the left side of the screen. For each assignment you will you either see a score, a blank, or a paper icon. The blank or a zero means the assignment has not been turned in, and the paper icon means it has been submitted, but not yet graded.
Materials Needed For Class
- Pen or pencil
- Headphones/Earphones may be brought from home or students may use the ones available in the school lab.
- A $5 Business Lab fee paid in the office or online. Student should bring me the receipt. A Student on fee waiver can obtain a receipt in the office. A Student with multiple Business classes in a semester only needs to pay the Business Lab Fee once per semester. This fee covers the use of hardware, software, and printing supplies for the semester.
- Membership in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) is encouraged. FBLA is a great club to join to get involved in school, get to know other students, and to add to resumes and college applications. FBLA will be doing several service projects, competitions, parties, and leadership conferences throughout the year. To join FBLA, the fee is $20 per year. However, when you join FBLA for $20 your lab fee will be waived. What a Bargain!
- Students AND PARENTS must digitally accept the Davis District Computer Use Agreement by signing in to their individual MyDSD accounts and opening the form. If either the student or the parent does not complete this step, students will lose their computer privileges until it has been resolved. This is not an excuse for not completing assignments!
Attendance
This is a rigorous class that will require students to be in class in order to be successful. Students who miss class will likely find it difficult to keep up, so please plan accordingly.
- All Davis School District Attendance and Citizenship Policies will be applicable to students in this course.
4 Tardies = “U”
1 Truant Citation = “U”
3 Unexcused Absences – “U”
- Absences, including school excused, will not excuse the student from making up missed assignments, tests, etc. Assignments should be made up by due dates for full credit. Following that time, reduced credit will be given for the completed assignment/test. An Excused Absence is required to make up a missed test.
- Students who are late to class will forfeit the right to make up any quizzes completed prior to the roll call. Bell Quizzes are worth 5 points daily.
ACADEMIC GRADING CRITERIA
This is a Competency Based Course. Competency Based Instruction means that all modules and tests are completed at a 70% level or higher. The two term grades will be averaged together to reflect the grade that will be submitted to WSU for 3 credits. The earned grade will go on an official WSU transcript.
The Chitester Exam and Production Exam can be taken only one time. Full credit is given for exams completed within one hour. Penalties apply to exams taking more than one hour.

Class Citizenship Standards
- Success in school, work, and life depends on responsible attendance. Therefore, violations in the Davis School District’s Attendance Policy will affect the student’s citizenship grade. See "Attendance" above.
- A positive attitude is very important for successfully completing Computer Technology and developing your life-long computer skill.
- A student is responsible to bring their supplies to class each day. This will help them utilize their time wisely and complete their assignments on time.
- Students will be assigned a computer in class. This process gives each student the responsibility of that workstation and whatever happens during their class period.
- Ipod, CD Players, or MP3 players are only permitted during individual work time. Anyone using such devices or with earphones in their ears at other times will have the device taken and the student can pick it up at the end of class. If you are behind on assignments this privilege will be suspended until you have brought yourself current with all assignments.
- Games and personal software are not permitted during class time without special permission.
- All guidelines in the “Davis District Computer Use Agreement,” will be enforced in the Internet Lab. Periodic checks will be done.
- Cheating: Both the giver and the receiver: First Offense = “U” & zero points earned.
- Respect for students and teachers alike is very important. You will be learning in a business-like environment and should conduct yourselves accordingly. No talking, moving around, or other disrupting acts will be permitted during class time. Please use printing supplies sparingly. Use the Print Preview feature to preview all work before printing. Printing privileges will be suspended if you abuse this policy.
- Violations of the Davis School District dress code will effect citizenship. Administrators, teachers, counselors, and building personnel have a dress code to live by too!
- Food and beverages are strictly prohibited in the computer lab! Consider this your warning!
CLASSROOM POLICY
Since Advanced Computer Technology is a business class as well as a college class, you will be required to conduct yourself in a business-like manner. Office workers must be to work on time, follow directions, be organized, be prepared, complete assignments neatly, efficiently, and on time. I expect the same from my students. I am looking forward to a great semester!
