Señor Hadlock’s Spanish for Spanish Speakers Class Disclosure

Email: sphadlock@dsdmail.net

Rationale:

¡Bienvenidos! Learning a new language involves interaction.  For us that will mean talking, playing games, reading out loud, etc.  I look forward to having you in my class.  This class is proficiency oriented. In this class, you will learn how to speak, read, write, and listen in Spanish. This class is also an exploration of the culture in which the language is spoken and its people.

Pedagogical Approach (how I teach):

I use the communicative approach, which means students learn language they need to know in order to do things they would do in real life.

My class is interactive. In my class, students learn collaboratively. They have to get out of their comfort zone and talk with each other.

I use Spanish as the primary language of instruction.

Attendance, Backpacks, Computer Agreement, Dress Code, and Electronic Devices: Central Davis Junior High School policies will be followed.

Citizenship; Behavior: I value your appropriate behavior in my classroom.  For all students who follow my classroom expectations (rules) well, you should expect an “H” in my class.  Off-task behavior (i.e. reading a book during class, talking while I’m talking, speaking in English during Spanish activities, not bringing a pencil, etc.) will result in lower citizenship marks.  Generally citizenship marks will correspond with the consequences: G-1st time, S-2nd time, N-3rdtime, U-4th time.  Exceptions can be made for individual cases.

Citizenship; Substitutes: Substitutes are professionals stepping into my classroom.  I expect that you give them the respect that they deserve.  If a student’s name is written down by a substitute for poor behavior then they will receive a “U” for their citizenship and will be put on a behavior contract.

Citizenship; Tardies: I expect that when the bell rings students are in their seats working on the starter.  If students are out of their seat, or not working on the starter, this will be considered a tardy.  Frequent tardies are unacceptable. 5 tardies will count as a U, 3 tardies will count as an N.  Talk with Sr. Hadlock for more details.

Computers: The classroom set of computers is brand new this year!  I would like to keep them that way.  Students are only allowed to use the classroom computers under direct teacher supervision.  Students are only allowed to use the computer assigned to them.  Students must only transport computers with two hands (just like a lunch tray).  If a student damages a device, they will be charged the price to repair/replace the device.

Grading:  Every grade will be tied to a standard. Your grade is based on your PROFCIENCY. Your ability to communicate in Spanish as demonstrated by assessments constitute your entire grade.

Housekeeping items:

-Keep your area neat and clean.  If something needs to be cleaned up then do it yourself or ask Sr. Hadlock if you need additional help.

-Do not bring food or drink into my classroom.  Water is just fine to have.  Exceptions are made for a student’s medical needs.

Interventions: Periodically throughout the semester, Mr. Hadlock will provide students with the ability to work on and turn in missing/late work.  Students must use this time wisely and be self-driven during this time.

Late work: Because Mr. Hadlock allows late work up to the last day of the term.  Late work will be graded in a timely manner.

Turning in homework: all homework must be turned in physically (on paper in the classroom) or digitally (on Canvas).  No homework that is e-mailed will be accepted.
