Mrs. Hall's Happenings
What We’re Learning This Week
In reading, we will be starting the reading passages in our new Amplify ELA program (ELA--English Language Arts). This week we're reading excerts from Roald Dahl's memoir. He is the author of books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach.
In math this week we will be learning about finding surface area of rectangular prisms.
In social studies we’ll be finishing our unit on Early Man.
This week in science we will finish up Moon Phases with a test on Wednesday. Then we will start learning about the why we have seasons.
Homework on the Computer
Tonight students will have their first homework assignment that needs computer access. They are allowed to bring their classroom computers home when needed to complete homework. Please make sure they get their computer BACK into their backpacks. These assignments will almost always be on Canvas. I want the students to become very comfortable with Canvas before heading to junior high next year.
Monday Packets
You should have seen the first set of corrected work come home last Monday. Corrected work will be coming every Monday (Because of the Monday holiday this week, there will not be a packet until next week). Please make sure to take a few minutes and look through their graded assignments--especially the weekly math quiz. It is one of the best ways you can keep track of how they are doing in class.
At-home Reading
Sixth graders should be reading at home 100 minutes at week (or about 20 minutes a day). I really can't emphasize enough the importance of individual reading. It makes a difference in all aspects of students' academics. We just finished Acadience testing last week, and I have a lot of students reading below grade level. I will do all I can in class to help them become better readers, but I really need your support with independent reading at home to help them be where they need to be by the end of the school year. Don't forget to record completed books on the 30-book challenge page in their red folders.
