What We’re Learning This Week

This week in language arts we’ll be finishing the novel Hatchet.  Students will be completing a small book project as their homework this week.  They can choose between writing journal entries, creating a comic strip, or creating an "artifact" from the book.  More detailed instructions will come home tomorrow.  This assignment is due Friday.

We will also be continuing to read selections from our new unit, Mysteries and Investigations.  The students have been SO INTERESTED in the readings so far.  Ask them to tell you what they have learned about yellow fever.

This week in math we'll be finishing our chapter on ratios.  Our chapter test will be on Wednesday.  Students will bring home a test review for homework on Tuesday night.

We will be starting our Ancient Egypt unit in social studies, always a student favorite!  This week we'll be learning about mummification and starting our carrot mummies.  We'll also learn about hieroglyphs and will make a cartouche.

In science we'll be learning how gravity and inertia keep our solar system together.

Halloween

We'll be celebrating Halloween with a sixth-grade party in the cafeteria from 9:00-10:30.  We need help with game stations and refreshments for our ice cream bar.  Please see the link in the email.  Students may wear costumes to school.  Please remember the district guidelines when choosing a costume:  Be respectful (no racially or culturally insensitive costumes), Be responsible (no masks, weapons, or gory costumes).

Paper Mache

Sixth graders will be making King Tut masks on Wednesday, October 16 (weather permitting).  They WILL GET MESSY.  We use a flour/water paste so it will easily wash out of clothes.  It is an early dismissal day, but if you know they won't be able to handle being messy, they could bring a clean shirt to change into.

If you have any newspaper at your house you could donate, please send it to school.  I will also need donations of 3-4 cans of gold spray paint.

Absences

When your student is absent, I collect all their work and fill out a "Make-up Work" cover sheet.  If your student is feeling up to completing assignments, please just send me an email and I can leave the work in the office so you can swing by and pick it up or I can sometimes send home assignments digitally.  If not, the packet will be on their desk when they return to school.  Students ARE expected to make up any assignments from when they are absent.  Please note, when your students have 5 absences (excused or not), I will be sending out the district attendance letter.  This will be followed by an administration letter if your student reaches 10 absences.  Attendance at school is a major component of school success.
