About Me:

Teaching Experience and Education:

I'm going on my 8th year of teaching this year, most of which was spent at Venture High School in Ogden; this will be my second year at Clearfield.  I recently remarried and moved to Clearfield and am now happy to be teaching at Clearfield High School.  I teach Engineering and Computer Science but I am also licensed to teach several other areas including Journalism, Speech, Design and more.  I currently have two Bachelor Degrees, both obtained from Weber State University and multiple endorsements.  I've worked many places, such as WSU, KWCR 88.1 FM, Ogden Weber Chamber of Commerce, etc. Through these and other jobs, I have been able to obtain many experiences and skills that I'm more than happy to talk about.

Family:

I am from Utah, but I've not always lived in Utah and I'm happy to say that I have visited all but 6 U.S. states - and over half of the provinces in Canada.  I have 5 kids and a really awesome wife, who teaches 1st grade in Granite SD.  You may have a chance to meet 3 of my kids who attend South Clearfield Elementary School.

Likes and Dislikes:

Engineering, science, computers, theater, literature, communication, etc.  I like to build things and solve problems, but more than anything I like a good puzzle and I'm a huge gamer.  My first computer was a Commodore 128/64 and it taught me to use a computer before they were widely available in homes.  I like discovering new things and I try to keep up on everything nerdy, but especially things related to the space program.  I like to sing, play the piano, read and watch old 80s movies.  I dislike politics and rude attitudes for the sake of being rude or those who break others down for the sake of building ones self up

I learned later in my life that the value of education is solely based on grit.  When I was a teenager I had people in my life who felt I could never amount to anything and more or less gave up on me - it wasn't until I was 24 that I realized I could do more with my life and went to college.  I've since seen that grit, more than anything in my life, has given me more opportunities to achieve higher levels of success.

Why did I choose to be an Teacher vs. an Engineer?

I place this question in my Bio because it's one of the most asked questions, predominantly because there's such a large chasm between what I would get paid as an Engineer and what I get paid as a teacher.  There's a big long story that goes along with it, but to simplify: I chose to teach because I felt it was something that I was good at and it allowed me to still practice Engineering.  Essentially, it was something that Governor Herbert said to me once during a Workforce Development meeting.  He stated that we needed Engineers more than any other career in Utah and then encouraged our CEOs and local businesses to encourage their entry level employees to go to school to be Engineers.  The need was great and I knew I could have a larger impact becoming a teacher.  In using the fisherman's logic - If I fished for the community, I would never have to want and I would possibly only provide for a small part of the community, but if I taught others to fish, the community would grow and flourish.

TLDR: I felt I could make a larger impact as a teacher.

Once again, I'm excited to be your teacher this year and I look forward to meeting you all.  In the next assignment, I will be asking you about your ideal career and how it relates to Computer Science.
