Ms. Caruthers' Mini Biography:
This is my fifth year teaching at South Davis Jr High. I graduated from Utah State University as a History Teaching Major and Geography Teaching Minor. I was pleased to be honored as the History Teaching Major Student of the Year award for the 2018-2019 school year and I am also an active member of the International Geographical Honors Society (Gamma Theta Upsilon) and National History Honor Society (Phi Alpha Theta). I am excited to be part of the Spartan Family and work in such a great school district.

D.E.E.P. Utah Studies
Class Description:
An introductory course for social studies in Davis School District. Curricular content consists of key themes and concepts drawn from the social science of geography, history, economics, and government. Each of the concepts is explored through the use of Utah-specific examples, or Utah Studies. Literacy, historical thinking, and spatial skills are developed through the study of the concepts in the abstract and real-world Utah examples. The course focuses on the reading of both informational text and authentic, or primary source, material.
Materials needed for success in D.E.E.P. Utah Studies:
Composition Notebook, Writing Utensil, Folder or Binder to hold unit papers, and a charged Laptop. Students may also wish to have their own set of colored pencils, glue stick, and scissors if they don't want to share the classroom supplies.

Geography 1
Class Description:
Geography 1 includes an overview of Physical, Human and Cultural Geography. It will explore how to use geography as a tool to better understand the world in which we live. Studies will include Spatial Analysis, Source Analysis, Data Analysis, and supporting a claim with evidence.
Materials needed for success in Geography 1:
Lined Paper, Writing Utensil, Folder or Binder to hold unit papers, and a charged Laptop. Students may also wish to have their own set of colored pencils, glue stick, and scissors if they don't want to share the classroom supplies.
Geography 2
Class Description:
Geography 2 will expound upon Geography 1 content and skills with an overview of Political and Economic Geography. Studies will include Spatial Analysis, Source Analysis, Data Analysis, and supporting a claim with evidence.

Study Skills
Class Description:
This class will be a place for you the student to learn about "applied skills" or better known about "soft skills".
These including personal, interpersonal, or learning-based skills, such as life skills (problem-solving behaviors), people skills, and social skills. The skills have been grouped into three main areas:
- Learning and innovation skills: critical thinking and problem solving, communications and collaboration, creativity and innovation
- Digital literacy skills: information literacy, media literacy, Information and communication technologies (ICT) literacy
- Career and life skills: flexibility and adaptability, initiative and self-direction, social and cross-cultural interaction, productivity and accountability
We will be learning and apply each of types of skills into our educational experiences.
