Course Description:

Completion of this course will enable students to implement those decision-making skills they must apply and use to become wise and knowledgeable consumers, savers, investors, users of credit, money managers, citizens, and members of a global workforce and society. Students will study how to analyze influences on financial behavior, how to set and implement financial goals, analyze criteria for selecting a career and the impact of career choices on income and financial stability.  Students will also explore the use of credit, consumer protection, insurance, investments, and retirement issues. Students will be opening online app accounts to experience how these tools may be used.

In Class Instruction:

During our time together in class, we will be completing activities and lectures that cannot be completed at home. My goal for this course is to cover the necessary material in person and have the students work on implementing the curriculum at home. Students who are absent for whatever reason will need to contact me via email (cimoss@dsdmail.net) and reference canvas for instructions on how to complete classwork remotely.

Remote Learning:

Students are expected to complete 40 minutes of coursework at home during the week. Remote assignments will be assigned each week during in-class instruction. If you are unable to attend our in-class instruction reference canvas modules for necessary information. If students are in need of assistance during remote learning I will be available daily at the following times: M-TH 2:20-3:00 & Friday 12:30-2:30

If you would like to schedule a meeting time please email me at cimoss@dsdmail.net

  • A $3.00 Business course fee will cover the cost of all materials that will be used in this course.
  • Own headphones/earbuds, if desired. Classroom headphones are also available.

  • A great club to join to get involved in school, get to know other students, and to add to resumes and college applications. BAM will be doing several service projects, competitions, social events, and leadership conferences throughout the year. To join BAM, the fee is $30 per year.

Course Requirements

The class will consist of a variety of activities, class discussions, projects, assignments and assessments. Class attendance and participation are required

Attendance

This is a rigorous class that will require students to be in class in order to be successful. Students who miss class will likely find it difficult to keep up, so please plan accordingly.

  • All Davis School District Attendance and Citizenship Policies will be applicable to students in this course.
  • Tardies = “U”
  • 1 Truant Citation = “U”
  • 3 Unexcused Absences = “U”
  • Absences will not excuse the student from making up missed assignments, tests, etc.  Assignments should be made up by due dates for full credit.
  • For total credit, Assignments/Tests must be turned in by the “Due Date.”  Following that time, reduced credit will be given for the completed assignment/test. An Excused Absence is required to make up a missed test.
  • A school excused absence does not excuse a student from completing class work.
  • Students who are late to class will forfeit the right to make up any quizzes completed prior to the roll call.

Grading:

Occasionally, students in the class or teacher assistants will correct the work of other students. This practice has an important educational purpose in that it allows students to review assignments and quizzes and consider problem solving that may be different than their own. It also serves the important purpose of allowing me to give and review assignments and use correcting time as effectively as possible. Every effort will be made to respect the confidentiality of student work.

Grades

Your grades will be based on the score you earn on assignments given in each of the following categories:  Assignments/Activities & Quizzes/Tests The percentage breakdown is:  Tests and Quizzes: 20%, Assignments 80%

The grade breakdown will go as follows:

A94 – 100%            C73 – 76%

A-90 – 93%             C-70 – 72%

B+87 – 89%            D+67 – 69%

B83 – 86%              D63 – 66%

B-80 – 82%             D-60 – 62%

C+77 – 79%            F59% and below

Late Assignment Policy:

  • · Redoing of an assignment, within the 2-week due date, is encouraged to earn more points and reach a goal of 80% competency.
  • · The Lab will be open most days during lunch and after school until 3:00 p.m. to accommodate students’ make up work.
  • · Assignments turned in after the due date will receive 80% credit, unless prior arrangements have been made. Late assignments will only be accepted up to 2 weeks after the due date. However, success on the tests requires students to complete the assignments.
  • · Late tests will be docked 20% unless prior arrangements have been made.

State Competency Test

Students will be required to take a State Competency Test at the end of the semester.  This test is given to determine if students are skilled certified in specific areas.  The state test will be based on Academic Standards and Objectives, and Performance Objectives of the General Financial Literacy Curriculum.  To pass the test, a score of 80% is required on the performance objectives and written test.  A CTE Skill Certification Certificate will be issued to all students passing with 80% or better. This year the test will be a part of the students final grade.

Citizenship

  • The business classroom is a model of the business world. Problems with attendance and participation in class results in losing a citizenship grade just as those problems in the workforce would result in losing a job.   Conduct yourself in a business-like manner. Office workers must be to work on time, follow directions, be organized, be prepared, complete assignments neatly, efficiently, and on time. I expect the same from my students.
  • · Success in school, work, and life depends on responsible attendance. Therefore, violations in the Davis School District’s Attendance Policy will affect the student’s citizenship grade. See "Attendance" above.
  • · A positive attitude is very important for successfully completing this course
  • · A student is responsible to bring their supplies to class each day. This will help them utilize their time wisely and complete their assignments on time.
