Mr. Goddard's Canvas Board

Mr. Goddard's Canvas Board

I teach Secondary Math 1 and Secondary Math 2. Obviously, I like math, but that doesn't mean I always think it's fun or easy. Just like you, I have had times where math was very frustrating. Of course, teaching isn't all of my life (just most of it). I am also the faculty advisor for the SJH Disc Club, so let me know if you're interested in ultimate or disc golf.

For hobbies, I play a lot of video games. Mostly I avoid the big name games in favor of less known games that create unique experiences. Braid and Mark of the Ninja are two of my favorites. Both of them told stories that wouldn't have had the same impact without the interactivity that makes video games unique as a storytelling medium. During the summer, I usually do a lot of fly fishing and mountain biking. I have a harder time being active in the winter months, but usually I do a bit of snowshoeing.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. I was absent what do I need to make up?
Please visit the Canvas page for your class and find the lesson for the day that you missed. It will contain instructions and materials to help you understand what you missed. If you miss a quiz or a test, expect to be summoned during RAP to finish it (you have the option to schedule a day before or after school if you know you will miss RAP, I can also have you do it during lunch through the Lunch and Learn program).

2.   What is the best way to contact you?
Email is the fastest way to receive a response.

3. How can I know what homework my student has for math?
Anything I ask students to do at home will be posted in Canvas, however, the only homework I require is for students who chose to take Secondary Math 1 Honors. There are several reasons I choose not to give frequent homework assignments. One of those reasons is that the students that need it the most are often the students who need the most help to complete it. I would rather they get this practice in class so that I can ensure they get the help they need either from me or from a peer.

4. Should I check Canvas or MyDSD for my grades?
I will be updating grades in using Canvas this year. Those grades will automatically roll over to MyDSD each night. This means that in certain situations the scores in Canvas will be more current than the scores in MyDSD. However, the grades in both locations should match most of the time.

5. I feel like my student needs extra help what should I do?
The first step is to email me. In most cases, I can direct you to specific YouTube videos or other sites that can help.

6. What else can I do as a parent to help my student succeed in math?
I would suggest starting with this free course Links to an external site. from Jo Boaler at Stanford University. To get the most out of it, watch it with your student so you can talk about it together. It provides a lot information about the misconceptions people have about learning mathematics. As a takeaway from that class, I would encourage parents to praise effort and growth more often and to praise ability less often. I would also encourage parents to avoid saying things like "I'm not a math person either" to their students. If a student starts to believe that they aren't a "math person", it begins to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
