Secondary Math 1 is the name of typical 9th grade curriculum in Utah. It is an integrated course meaning it blends some algebra, some geometry, and some statistics topics into the same course rather than treating those as separate.
Key Ideas in Secondary Math 1:
- Algebra: Extend equation solving skills to include inequalities
- Algebra: Extend equation solving skills to solve systems of equations
- Algebra: Introduce function notation to communicate mathematical ideas
- Algebra: Introduce exponential functions to represent problems that lines cannot
- Stats: Extend data plots to understand and describe data
- Stats: Introduce tools to find a line of best fit and describe how well the data fits
- Geometry: Introduce precise tools for deciding if shapes are congruent
- Geometry: Extend the Pythagorean Theorem to find perimeters and areas of shapes
- Geometry: Extend translation, reflection, and rotation skills to include giving precise descriptions of the results and properties of these actions
- HONORS: Introduce vectors and matrices

Secondary Math 2 is the name of typical 10th grade curriculum in Utah. It is an integrated course meaning it blends some algebra, some geometry, and some statistics topics into the same course rather than treating those as separate.
Key Ideas in Secondary Math 2:
- Algebra: Introduce quadratic expressions, equations, and functions
- Algebra: Introduce operations with radicals
- Algebra: Introduce complex numbers
- Geometry: Introduce formal mathematical proofs using congruent triangles
- Geometry: Introduce the triangle definitions of trigonometric ratios
- Geometry: Introduce radian measure of angles and several other relationships in circles
- Stats: Extend probability to include compound events (for example, the probability of drawing a heart AND/OR/GIVEN a king from a deck of cards)
Before you think that this class is smaller because it has fewer key ideas, keep in mind the scope of most of the items on this list is much broader than the items in Secondary Math 1. The first item is a good example of this as it could easily represent an entire term or more of content on it's own.

RAP is the Sunset Junior High equivalent of an advisory period. During this class students are often summoned to other classes. This provides a time for teachers to provide additional support or to help students who were absent take quizzes or tests that were missed. For students that are not summoned, they spend the first 20 minutes reading and then have 20 minutes to work on homework or other assignments. If students do not have other work, they will be asked to continue reading. One day a week, the reading time is replaced with a social-emotional lesson to teach students life skills for interacting with others. |
