English 7 & Honors English 7

Welcome to seventh-grade English-Language Arts, where you will practice and demonstrate effective communication through reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. We will also incorporate critical thinking skills and present information in a variety of formats including activities, projects, presentations, and assignments. 

Intended Learning Outcomes: 

  • Reading/Literature: Students will read assigned and chosen literature selections and demonstrate comprehension through in-class discussions, tested materials and/or assigned projects. Students are required to read one independent (outside of class) novels per term. 
  • Writing: Students will utilize the writing process daily through weekly free writes, response to readings, and assigned tasks. Students will periodically critique each other’s writing. 
  • Journal: Students will respond to various writing prompts and keep pertinent notes and in-class assignments in a writing journal. Participation points will be given twice each term 
  • Grammar: Students will demonstrate knowledge of conventions and usage through weekly assignments, quizzes, and projects. 
  • Vocabulary/Spelling: Students will build their working vocabularies through assigned readings, and weekly vocabulary assignments. Students will demonstrate appropriate word usage through related assignments and weekly quizzes. 
  • Presentations: Students will review and practice basic speaking skills and present information to classmates (in large and small groups) through daily interaction and assigned presentations.

  • A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens   
  • Movies and movie clips - The Muppets Christmas Carol, Disney’s A Christmas Carol, A&E Bio of Charles Dickens, and The Man Who Invented Christmas  
  •  Bomb - Steve Sheinkin   
  •  Movies and movie clips - related to World War II and the building of the Atomic Bomb  
  •  The Outsiders - S.E. Hinton   
  •  Movies and movie clips - The Outsiders (Francis Ford Coppola’s original production – not the pg 13 2nd version), and clips related to 1960’s pop culture and SE Hinton

Materials Needed: 

  •  White lined paper (any size line) 
  •  Pencils. Pencils. Pencils. 
  •  5 pack of multi-colored highlighters 
  •  Colored pencils are helpful but not necessary 

Rules: 

  •  Be prepared —bring your novel, English binder, and pen/pencil to class each day. 
  •  Be on time —be in your assigned seat (ready to work) by the time the bell stops ringing. 
  •  Follow directions —the first time, please. 
  •  Show respect —for yourself, classmates, teachers and staff, and school property. 

Policies: 

  •  Tardies — Students must be in their assigned seats, with required materials, and ready to work when the bell rings. For our school’s tardy policy see Student Handbook located online and in the Sunset student planner. 
  • Late Work —Assignments are expected to be turned in on time or prior to due dates. If you have extenuating circumstances, please see me as soon as possible. Late assignments will be handled on a case-by-case basis. 
  • Absences —Students are responsible for following-up on missed work due to absences and to obtain information prior to planned absences. The Canvas calendar is updated daily. 
  • Make-up Testing and Assignments —Missed tests, quizzes, and assignments must be completed within one week of the missed due date. 
  • Electronic Devices —Electronic devices may be used with teacher permission, as some assignments and activities incorporate various technologies. Using a cell phone during class without permission will result in loss of phone for the day
