Course Syllabus/Disclosure: Biology - Jensen
Course Overview: The purpose of education is to prepare students to thrive in a diverse and ever-changing society. Learning is inherently social and student-centered, requiring authentic experiences in an environment where students can construct meaning from their world.
Class Learning Objectives:
- Interactions between living organisms and their environment.
- Matter cycles and energy flows.
- Stability and change in ecosystems, with a focus on biodiversity.
- Structures and functions of living organisms.
- Heredity, including the role of DNA in gene expression and protein synthesis.
- Evolution through the mechanism of natural selection.
Fee: There is a $10.00 fee for this class, payable via MyDSD after the first two weeks of the term (in order to accommodate schedule changes).
Grading Scheme:
- 50% = Assignments and Labs
- 50% = Tests and Quizzes
Grade Scale:
- A = 90%
- B = 80%
- C = 65%
- D = 50%
Retakes/Redo's:
- Retakes are allowed for quizzes, tests, video questions, and reading guides.
- There are no retakes/redo’s for labs or other assignments submitted on paper.
Late Work Policy:
- Late work will be accepted with a valid excuse – for up to two weeks.
- Up to 10% may be subtracted each day for late assignments.
- Assignments will be closed 14 calendar days after the due date; no work will be accepted after this period without prior approval.
Extra Credit:
- I don’t offer Extra Credit
- Bonus points may be awarded for exceptional work on written assignments and labs.
Citizenship Policy: Students will not receive a grade solely based on attendance or academic performance.
Students can receive a U (Unsatisfactory) for:
- 4 tardies (both excused and unexcused).
- 3 unexcused absences (30 minutes late equals an absence).
- Checking in with the office but not attending class.
- Three or more cell phone warnings.
- Disrupting the learning environment.
- Not following class rules.
- Taking the hall pass for more than 5 minutes.
- Leaving class before the bell rings.
- Using inappropriate language.
Rules:
- NO CELL PHONES without teacher permission.
- Produce quality work and check your answers before submission.
- Avoid disrupting the class. Enter quietly if late, and do not text students in other classes.
- Be prepared with a pen/pencil, paper, and your computer. Snacks (e.g., crackers, granola bars, Jolly Ranchers) are allowed.
- Follow the school's dress code policy.
- Stay on task.
- Remain awake and alert.
- Ensure a safe environment.
- Maintain cleanliness.
- Use the hall pass for bathroom or drink breaks.
- Repair what is broken.
- Obtain necessary materials promptly.
- Be respectful and kind.
- Do not copy or plagiarize.
- Do not line up at the door before the bell rings.
- Do not leave class before the bell rings.
Cheating Policy:
- Both students involved in cheating will receive a zero.
- Do not "help" or "work together" without teacher permission.
- Use "think, pair, share": First, do your own work, then discuss differences with peers.
- Show your work and explain reasoning in your own words.
- Ensure written work is original and in your own words.
AI Engagement:
- AI integration is not part of the curriculum at this time. AI use is prohibited on assignments unless otherwise approved. If you wish to use AI, consult with me for possible alternative assignment instructions.
