Subjects

English Language Arts

Reading:

In second grade, we primarily use the McGraw Hill reading curriculum. To become a successful reader, students need to read 20 minutes at LEAST 5 days each week. This is the single most important thing you can do to help your child become an independent reader and to be prepared to learn ALL subjects in school.

Writing:

Writing is a great way for students to solidify and think about their learning. We write across the curriculum. Each student has a writing journal that they will be writing in multiple times each week.

Every Friday students will have three language arts tests: comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. These will be completed in Canvas. The spelling test will need to be returned to me on Monday or Tuesday for grading. Your child will earn classroom money for returning the spelling test on time.

 Math

In second grade your child will be learning from the Advantage Math curriculum. Additionally, students need to practice math skills on i-Ready 20 minutes a day, 4 days each week. I-Ready is a self-paced digital program that assigns lessons based on your child's ability. By now your child should be fluent in basic math facts, addition and subtraction, from 0-20. Children that cannot quickly recall basic math facts need additional practice at home.
