My name is Chrissy Heaston and I am thrilled to be your writing teacher this year! This is my seventh year teaching sixth grade and my eleventh year teaching elementary school. I'm so excited to write with YOU this school year!
**I will not regularly update this webpage. Please check your Canvas Writing page to see all assignments. You can contact me with any questions or concerns at 801-402-2600 or cheaston@dsdmail.net.
This year we will focus on teaching narrative, informative and argumentative writing. We will learn how to clearly organize our ideas, support claims, use academic vocabulary, and write with a formal style. In order to accomplish these goals, your student will have practice with a variety of journal prompts, direct grammar instruction, classroom discussion, graphic organizers, paragraph writing and editing, five paragraph essays, document-based question activities and various other writing experiences.
In Class Time: Each week we will work on different writing assignments in class. Students will complete short paragraphs, essays, research, stories and other writing activities. We will focus most of our class time together on direct instruction.
Grading and Late Work: I will accept late work up to two weeks after the due date. If your student is not happy with a grade on any assignment, they have the option to correct their assignment and turn it in again for an improved grade. Any re-take assignments need to be turned in one week after the student receives the assignment. We hope that students will take advantage of this option to better improve their understanding of the written language. Missing assignments will be updated by Friday. PLEASE take a moment each week to review your student’s missing work on my DSD.
