Biography:
Hi! I'm Ms. Jex! I teach Earth Science and AP Environmental Science here at South Davis Junior High. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Weber State in 2018. I then went to work for an engineering firm in the mining industry for three years before making the career change to become a teacher. I have recently become a member of the Weber State University Earth and Environmental Science Department Advisory Board. I worked in healthcare for 13 years prior to getting my degree which is where I learned the patience and understanding I now show my students in the classroom.

About the Course:
I am so excited you're in my class this year! This class will focus on topics within the fields of astronomy, geology, meteorology, hydrology, natural resources, and environmental sustainability. In this class you will not only learn more about the world around you, but also the basics of how science is done and how to think and experiment like a scientist. Be ready to think, explore, observe, and discuss science with your classmates this year.
All students are welcome. Every effort will be made to meet the specifications of 504 and IEP plans. Students who anticipate needing accommodations, or who feel their needs are not being met, should reach out via phone or email as soon as possible.
Class Expectations and Policies:
Please Bring to Class Everyday: pencil, three-ring binder, notebook, and school-issued laptop and charging cable.
Expectations: Students are expected to come to class on time, be prepared, and stay on task during the entirety of class time. Homework is rarely assigned in this class, so it is imperative that you participate in class activities as that is when learning will take place.
Late Work: Late work will be accepted, and you can receive up to full points on late assignments, but your citizenship grade may be affected. See “Citizenship." No late work will be accepted after the end of the term.
Missing Work: Students should check Canvas when they miss class to see what work they need to complete. If supplies or help are needed, students should contact their teacher (via email or talk before or after class) to get help. Missed work should be completed promptly and will not be counted late if completed within one week of missing class. If a student has a special circumstance or concern, they should speak with their teacher.
Lab Safety: We will be doing experiments and hands on activities throughout the year. Students are required to learn about safety and pass a district safety quiz before they can participate in labs. Labs are a privilege and may be taken away for inappropriate or unsafe lab practices.
Academic Dishonesty: Students are expected to do their own work unless working with a partner/group or otherwise specified by Ms. Jex. Any academic dishonesty will result in an automatic zero on the assignment and a U for citizenship.
