Woodworking 1 Course Disclosure
Weston Kidder
Course description and objectives
This course is designed to introduce students to the woodshop. Students will learn how to use power and hand woodworking tools. Each student will complete course work and complete a hands-on term project in the shop. Materials and methods will be taught and understood. This course will prepare students for the Cabinetmaking and or Furniture and Design advanced class.
Safety in the shop will be taught, understood, and practiced daily. A safety test must be passed 100% before a student will be allowed to work in the shop. Keeping yourself and other students safe is the top priority of each student and of the instructor. Any safety violation will result in a “U” citizenship grade and possible removal from the course. (Shooting nail guns at someone is the best example for removal). Students will be using power tools. There are risks associated with using shop tools. Each tool will be demonstrated by the instructor. Safety will be taught for each tool that the students will be using in the shop.
Textbook
The course textbook that we will be using is “Modern Cabinetmaking” by Umstattd and Davis. We will be reading and reviewing chapters 1, 18, 21, 23, 26, 29, 31, 33. Textbooks will be checked out on a limited individual basis; otherwise they will remain in the classroom.

Canvas
Course work and classroom resources will be found on canvas. Students will also be expected to submit timecards/assignment logs on canvas to receive participation points. Watch for assignments and due dates to ensure assignment and timecards are not late.
Expectations
This class will be modeled after a work environment. Students are expected to arrive on time ready to participate. It is the student’s responsibility to be ready to work each day in a safe manner. Students are expected to contribute to the class/work environment in a positive manner and help create an inclusive learning environment where every student can learn.
Disruptive behavior, abusive language, bullying, crude language, and harassment will not be tolerated. My number one rule is treat others like you want to be treated. This is an elective class, you have chosen to enroll in woodworking, come to class with a good attitude, be ready to learn something new and have fun.
Required Materials/fees
- Project Fee- The material to build the projects for this class $30. All fees must be paid in the office before students work in the shop. Please pay before midterm if possible. Once all students have paid in the class we will start working in the shop.
- Fee Waiver- If you have a fee waiver please work with the office to take care of the fees associated with this class. Fee waiver will cover fees/material for all required projects associated with your grade. It will not cover extra or elective projects.
- Safety glasses (z87)- – A classroom set of safety glasses will be provided. Students may bring their own safety glasses if they choose. If you buy your own glasses make sure they are z87 approved. Safety glasses will be worn 100% of the time that a student is in the shop. Normal eyeglasses are not a substitute for safety glasses. I have some googles that fit over eyeglasses.
- Tape measure- It is not recommended that students purchase a tape measure. You are welcome bring one from home or buy one but is unnecessary. I have plenty shop tape measures for the class to share.
Citizenship
Citizenship grades will be determined by attendance, everyday behavior, and work ethic. You will earn a “U” if you have 4 or more unexcused absences or tardy. Violation of class safety polices will also result in a “U” and the possibility of the student being removed from the course for violations. Stealing parts to projects will also result in a “U”. Stealing/abuse of equipment will also result in a “U” and referral to the administration and or school resource officer.
Late Work
Assignments submitted late will be docked 2 percent each day past the due date. I give you plenty of time to complete assignments, be responsible and submit assignments on time. If you have circumstances that caused you to be late, please communicate that to me in person, email, or canvas.
Electronic devices
Per school policy, devices may only be used with the teacher’s permission. On occasion, cell phones and other devices will be used during a lesson in the classroom. Cell phones or other devices are never to be used in the shop; this is considered a safety violation (this includes headphones of any type). The first violation of this policy will result in a verbal warning. The second violation parents will be contacted. The third violation the administration will be notified.
Grading Scale
A = 95-100% A-= 90–94% B+ = 87-89% B = 83-86% B-= 80–82% C+ = 77-79%
C = 73-76% C-= 70-72% D+ = 66-69% D = 63-66% D-= 60-62% F = below 60%

Student Safety and Consent Form Woodworking
(Full Name) _______________________ will, as part of his/her shop experience, operate machines, power tools, and hand tools. There is a risk of injury. If there are any concerns, it is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian to inform the instructor before the student begins work in the shop.
Each student will be given proper instruction for each machine and tool and safety procedures concerning it. They will also pass a safety test before they are allowed to operate any machine. The students must assume responsibility for following safe practices. Parents are invited to visit the shop to inspect the machines and or see them in operation.
This is an elective class and in order to receive the experience necessary for this class each student will construct a project that will cost money. However, money should not stop you from participating. Talk or the instructor or an administrator if you are unable to pay the fees. We want every student to have the opportunity to learn!
I understand the risk of injury and promise to follow all safety rules in the shop. I also accept the responsibility to pay for the projects by the due dates before I will be allowed to work. Please sign and return this page to Mr. Kidder.
