Math
Welcome!
In Mathematics this year we will focus on expanding on previous years' understanding. We will develop your capacity to complete multi-step processes. We will be primarily using the M3 program along with spiral math reviews and problems of the day. See below for a list of the concepts covered in 4th grade.
Math Skills Areas
Numbers and Operations
- We will read, write, compare, order, and round numbers to the millions place.
- We will add and subtract numbers to the millions place with regrouping.
- We will multiply one digit numbers by tens, hundreds and thousands.
- We will estimate products (multiplications).
- We will multiply multiple digit numbers (up to 4 digits) by one and two digit numbers. We will explore multiple methods of understanding these multiplication concepts, but will end up practicing the standard algorithm.
- We will estimate quotients (division).
- We will divide tens, hundreds, and thousands by one digit divisors.
- We will divide multiple digit numbers by one digit divisors. We will explore multiple methods of understanding these division concepts, but will end up practicing the standard algorithm for long division with remainders.
- We will discuss and practice finding factors and multiples.
- We will discuss and understand rules of divisibility and prime and composite numbers.
Fractions and Decimals
- We will discuss and find equivalent fractions.
- We will reduce fractions to simplest form.
- We will discuss and find common denominators.
- We will compare and order fractions with unlike denominators.
- We will change fractions greater than one to mixed numbers and vice-versa.
- We will add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators.
- We will subtract fractions and mixed numbers with renaming.
- We will find multiples of unit fractions (unit fraction=one in the numerator).
- We will multiply fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers.
- We will relate fractions, decimals, and money.
Geometry, Measurement, and Data
- We will discuss and define lines, rays, and angles.
- We will classify triangles by angles.
- We will classify quadrilaterals.
- We will discuss, find, and draw lines of symmetry.
- We will measure, draw and add angles.
- We will learn customary unit measurements for length, weight, and liquid volume.
- We will learn metric unit measurements for mass and liquid volume.
- We will learn how to calculate elapsed time.
- We will read and create line plots.
- We will calculate perimeter and area of regular quadrilaterals.
- We will calculate area of combined rectangles.
