Objectives: Make an accordion sketch book that you can use in class each day. This book is very flexible it can be used to mind map or it can be used linearly. You may also use this unit to make a sketch book for home use.
Why: Sketch books are a place to practice and record our progress in drawing. We draw to communicate. So a sketch book is one of the most important things to own as an artist. It is where we record our ideas. Good or bad. It is a place to make mistakes without worry before making a finished piece of art. It is for experimentation and reflection. It is a fun place for you to draw what you are interested in. I will only be grading that you use it. Not what you draw. (Please keep it school appropriate)
Standard: Create.
Make a sketchbook We may not finish this the first day please contact me before doing this assignment unless you want a sketch book at home. In that case watch the videos before starting.
This is one of the projects that is easier to do in class, but if you will not be here for a week or more please follow the steps below.
Watch the Video. If you can't easily follow along, pause the video and follow the written instructions below.
1. Print out the template on 9X12 inch card stock, or get a copy from me. Sketchbook Accordion 2022.pub Download Sketchbook Accordion 2022.pub
2. Fold on the solid lines. All folds go towards the inside of the book. I have found it is much easier to fold the pages if you score the lines first, by drawing on them with a ballpoint pen.
3. Cut off the gray areas right to the edge of the paper.
4. In the strips next to the areas you just cut off, Glue the small strips to back of spine of your book and the other one to the flap. This will make a pocket.
5. Accordion fold a 6X18 inch paper into 4 equal sized pages.
6. Glue the first page to the cover. Leave about 1/8 inch around all sides of the cover to protect the pages.
After the glue is dry you will draw each day in your sketch book.
This book will be graded around midterm and the end of each term. The grade will be on whether or not you are using the book, not your skill level. This book should be a place to explore drawing, Not a precious document that must be perfect. No grading the first day keep your book and use it every day when you are in class. I will be grading it near midterm. below is the rubric I will use.
I am including a link made by the woman who taught me to make accordion sketchbooks page. The videos are very interesting if you want to make your own sketch book that is not the size of our book. https://accordionbookproject.com/videos-how-to-and-why-do-level-1-68a42d68bb5f Links to an external site.
