Course Objective
This course will help further expand your knowledge of the 7th grade standards of mathematical practices. These will prepare you for 8th grade and real life. You will learn how to apply math into these real-world situations and will be given an end-of-year project to demonstrate the knowledge obtained. It is expected that you will follow along in class discussions, work on homework in class when given time and work with your peers in given situations. Below are the following standards that will be covered this year in 7th grade.
Mathematical Standards
In Grade 7, instructional time should focus on four critical areas:
(1) Developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships.
(2) Developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations.
(3) Solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
(4) Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
If you would like more information on these standards this is the website you can use to see all of the standards for 7th grade: https://www.uen.org/core/core.do?courseNum=5170
Grading Policy
Exams: 70% of final grade.
Quizzes: 20% of final grade.
Homework: 10% of final grade.
Exams/Quizzes
All exams/quizzes are taken in class on the computer. Students are responsible for bringing their computers to class charged. Exams will count as 70% of the students’ grade and they are only given the chance to retake the exam once. Quizzes are only 20% of the students’ grade and will not be given the chance to retake. The exams are more questions as they cover the entirety of the unit we cover. Quizzes are over less questions than exams and cover more of what we are currently covering at the moment. Students are allowed to use calculators on these exams and quizzes.
If there is a student that has missed school due to a family/medical emergency between the discretion of the student and I we can arrange a time for them to take any exam or quiz missed, after the student returns to school. If a student knows they will be missing school on an exam or quiz day, please have them come talk to me prior to leaving or immediately after they return to take arrange a time to take the exam/ quiz.
Exam Retake Policy
We do offer a singular retake for any exams the student takes. However, there is a time window when the retake does close. Each student is given a three-week window to complete the steps to retake an exam. This is a math department policy, we want to encourage students to not get behind. Again, if an emergency comes up between the discretion of the student and I we’ll figure something out.
Students must follow the following steps in order to be granted a retake, or they will not be granted a retake.
Retake steps:
- All homework prior to the exam must be at an 83% proficiency (a 3 on standard based grading).
- For example, if they want to retake end of unit 2 exam, all of unit 2’s homework must be at an 83% proficiency.
- Exam corrections must be completed. The student will be given access to the exam to go through and if out exam corrections. This is a document the students will need to fill out about every problem they have missed on the exam. They will explain what they did wrong and then solve correctly and submit the document in canvas.
- Once both of these things are completed the student will have to fill out a summons request form to be summoned to spartan academy to retake the exam.
Only when these three steps are completed will the student be summoned to spartan academy to retake the exam.
Extra Credit
There isn’t any extra credit offered in this course.
Late Work Policy
If you miss an assignment you won’t be docked any points. However, if you are missing most of your homework, it will be reflected in your citizenship grade. Students are given ample time to work on homework in class, it is expected that they use that time wisely to avoid having missing work.
Calculator Policy
Calculators are fine to have in class they are highly encouraged to have their own as there is not enough in the classroom for everyone to have their own. They will also be required when they get to 9th grade to have a graphing calculator. Phones are not allowed to be used as calculators nor is google search as it could be mistaken for cheating. This is the calculator we use in class it's a TI-30X and about nine dollars and highly encouraged for math this year.
Academic Honesty
In this class, academic honesty is very important. Cheating means using someone else’s work or getting help when you are not allowed. This includes copying answers, using notes or devices without permission, or letting someone else do your work or searching for the answer using various websites or ai to help you.
If you cheat on a math test or assignment:
1st offense, you will get a zero on that homework/exam.
2nd offense, you will meet Ms. Raymond and your parents and automatic U for citizenship grade.
3rd offense, you will be taking exams/ homework on paper.
Attendance Policy
This is the same as the school policy, students are encouraged to be at school and in class. If students are gone for various reasons, they are responsible for making sure that their homework gets done. Students may use the resources given them in the canvas course to help them catch up if they missed class. Unexcused absences if becomes a consistent can affect a students’ citizenship grade.
Citizenship Policy
Students are expected to participate in class discussions, note taking and group work. When failure to do so could end in less than adequate citizenship grade. If student is consistently off task, disrupting others/class, continues to play games on their computer/ cell phone this takes away from the learning environment of the classroom. Students’ citizenship grades can play affect on whether they get to participate in sports or various activities here at the school. It’s important that they try their best in participating in their learning.
Phone Policy
This policy is the same as the school policy and district policy. There is no cell phones allowed in class at any time. If it is out during class time the school’s phone policy will be enforced. If this becomes a habit it can hurt the student’s citizenship grade. Please refer to the school’s phone policy if you have any questions.
