Course Description

The pursuit of physical vigor and health is our main objective. Since many lifelong practices and habits are acquired during the junior high years, these developing years are extremely important to the establishment of sound health practices. This course focuses on skill development, physical fitness, positive social interaction, sportsmanship, and an emphasis on lifetime sports and activities.

Participation

Participation includes being in class, give an honest and good effort, being dressed for class, following the rules of the activity, being fair and respectful to classmates and instructors, playing on the right team, using proper language, having proper behavior in the locker room, not talking during roll call or while the instructors are talking, and listening and following directions. Students will earn points each day for active participation. Each day a student has class, there will be a total of 4 participation points available to earn. To earn a 4, students must be participating in the activity we are doing in the correct manner and be dressed out. A student would only earn a 3 if they, for example came to class and did everything they were supposed to but were not dressed out. Students who do not dress out or participate can earn up to 2-0 points for that day.

Dress

Students must come to class dressed and ready to participate. Dress includes a proper shirt, shorts or pants, and shoes. The shirt does not have to be a North Layton shirt but must be one that covers the whole body. No tank tops! North Layton Shirts are available to purchase for $5 if desired but are not required. Shorts or pants must be pulled up on the waist, and the length must conform to school policy (3 inches from the knee). An athletic shoe (rubber soles with laces) is required. Students must be dressing in proper uniform each day. If a student refuses to dress in the proper gym attire, they will spend the entire class in ISS or in the office with an adult supervisor. A student’s participation grade and citizenship will be marked down if they refuse to dress in gym attire. Parents will also be notified if a student did not dress in gym attire for a day.

State Standard Scores & Fitness Tests: The state of Utah has created standards for junior high physical education classes. Each unit will have specific standards that students will be tested on to see if they have mastered those specific standards. The standards will be tested using written tests as well as skills tests. You can view the district physical education standards by going to https://www.davis.k12.ut.us/academics/physical-education/junior-high and clicking on your grade level. Students will also be tested on a pre, mid, and post fitness test throughout the semester. The areas tested will be push-ups, sit-ups, sit & reach, mile run, and the pacer test.

Course Materials Needed

All students are required to have their own pencil or pen with them that they can always use in class. It would be smart to keep one in their gym locker and the teachers will let them know when it is needed in class. Students may also be asked to use their school assigned lap tops to complete online assignments.

Canvas

Many of the assignments we do this semester will be submitted on canvas. Check canvas regularly to know what assignments are due for this class.

Other Information

Each student will be issued a gym locker to store their PE clothes. Students are expected to keep their clothes in the locker so they can be dressed for class. It is suggested that each student uses the locker consistently and does not reveal the combination to anyone. The teacher will not give the combination to anyone except to whom it is issued. The student is responsible for securing their belongings in their lockers. We cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items. Keep you PE locker locked at all times.

Students must have permission to leave class. Students must be in the gym/locker room before the tardy bell rings. Students will be given 5 minutes after the tardy bell rings to get dressed and in their roll call spots. At the end of class, students will be given 5 minutes to change and get dressed in their school clothes. Students may not wait in the hallway for the bell to ring. The gym/locker room doors will remain closed until the bell rings.

No Aerosol Sprays will be permitted in the locker rooms. Some students have allergies and they are not allowed. Any type of bottle that comes with a spray cap is not allowed. For example, perfume, hair spray, body spray, and axe spray. Stick deodorant is allowed and highly recommended.

Make-up Work

It is the responsibility of the student to make up any absences, assignments, work, dress points, and/or tests. All work can be made up during scheduled times determined by the teacher. To make up missed participation and dress points the student needs to participate in 1 hour of physical activity on their own time. A note or email from the parent is needed in order to receive the points.

Notes from Parents and Doctors

Students will be expected to dress and participate in class unless a note is provided from the parents or doctor. If the student is to be excused for more than 1 week, a doctor’s note is required. Sitting out due to injury will require missed points to be made up. Students are still required to dress in their gym clothes if they are sitting out due to an illness or injury unless a circumstance does not permit it.
