Course Description

US History Honors students will be learning about US history from pre-Columbian cultures through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Utah Studies students will be learning about Utah from prehistoric through modern times focusing on geography, history, economics, and government.

Grading

Assignments will be a mix of paper and digital work.  Canvas will not show everything that students are required to complete. Please check Encore for the most accurate scores. All assignments are weighted equally and are graded using a performance rubric where students will receive a score ranging from 0-4 depending on the evidence of learning seen in the assignment. I do not enter M for missing. A 0 on the grade should be interpreted as missing. Only on rare occasions I get work submitted that doesn’t show any learning.

0 = No submission or insufficient evidence of learning the required standards

1 = Learning has begun. Limited evidence of learning. Completed what was done with the teacher.

2 = Learning has progressed but has not quite reached the standard.

3 = The student has learned the standard. The student makes some minor mistakes but gets the major points.

4 = Exceeding the expected standard. Few or no errors. Earning 100%.

In terms of how this translates into grades:

1 = D

2 = C

3 = B

4 = A

I will use the standard grading scale adopted by the school.

A = 93%

A- = 90%

B+ = 87%

B = 83%

B- = 80%

C+ = 77%

C = 73%

C- = 70%

D+ = 67%

D = 63%

D- = 60%

F = Below 60%

All assignments can be redone without deduction for being late. I accept late work through the last day of the term. I round grades up at the end of the term if the grade is within .5% of the next highest grade.

I expect academic honesty and for students to receive grades based on their own learning and progress.

Standards and Expectations:
· Students will be RESPECTFUL! I expect respect and students can expect the same from me.
I expect you to be considerate to the rights and property of others. Rude or disruptive
behavior will not be tolerated. Pay attention and participate in class, and don’t talk while
others are talking. I do NOT allow swearing, yelling, or sleeping in my class- your
citizenship will drop if you do, and you will lose your participation points for that class
period.
· Cheating will result in a “U” for the term and loss of all points on the assignment or test
(this includes plagiarism).
· Cell Phones/iPods: Cell phones, etc. should be turned off and be out of sight during class.
Students may not text or call during class. The first time the cell phone is used in class it
will be confiscated and returned at the end of class. The second time it will be taken to the
office.
· Students will follow the school dress code.
