The Rundown:
Even when you create amazing lighting and colors on set, digital editing can help you accentuate the best parts of your video to create everything to look its best. Today, we'll show you a more in-depth look at color-correction - the art of modifying light and color expression in a piece of media.
Terms to learn:
Color Correction | Fixing the colors in a video/film as a way to get them back to what they should like like for your project and make it more appealing. |
Temperature/Tint | Temperature is the warmth (Red, Orange, Yellow) or coolness (Blue and Cooler colors) of the film. Tint is the balance between magenta and green color casts. |
Highlights / Shadows | Highlights are the lightest elements in a video and shadows are the darkest areas. Adjusting this setting can make light objects lighter and dark objects darker. |
Whites / Blacks | Set the black or white balance and levels. |
LUT | (Look Up Table) Preset color grades making coloring your video during editing easier. |
The Instruction:
Watch the following video, paying attention to the terms and techniques listed above.
The Requirements:
Download these resources (clips and LUTS) Download Download these resources (clips and LUTS), edit them into a basic sequence, then adjust the colors using the color panel in Adobe Premiere. Complete the following steps along the way:
- Edit ALL the provided clips into a sequence.
- Split each clip in the middle of the clip to create two separate clips.
- On clips 1-2: Adjust just the basic correction (i.e. white balance, exposure, highlights, shadows, etc.) on the second half of each shot.
- On clips 3-5: Adjust both the basic correction, and then add a LUT to it to give it a stylized look.
No text is necessary on this assignment. However, points will only be awarded if the color correction you created improved the clip in some way (so don't make it extreme just for fun, that is).
Submit finished video to Canvas via a shared Google Drive link.
