Create a prepared background, then paint in the NEGATIVE space to create a very textural subject. You are basically going to paint around your subject, then go back in and add value and detail. For 2D, you may use cut paper to create negative and positive space. If you cut out the positive space and overlay it onto a prepared background (such as text) you will get a very interesting effect. Also, replacing elements with just white or a solid color can help create meaning for your piece.
