Course Description: United States History for grade 8 covers events and issues from the Age of Exploration through Reconstruction and the western movement, emphasizing the 18th and 19th centuries. Topics covered will include, but are not limited to: exploration, colonization, Revolutionary War, constitutional issues, nation building, Civil War, Reconstruction, and western movement. Standards 1 and 2 should be integrated throughout the course rather than taught independently. The remaining standards can be taught either chronologically or thematically. Although the emphasis of this course is on the 18th and 19th centuries, additional content may be covered as time permits.
Davis Digital 7-8 is an OPTIONAL program, continued enrollment is based on student success.
Successful Student Expectations
- Complete work on time, make a schedule for each day and stick to it.
- Ask questions of your teacher through your Canvas Inbox. If further instruction is needed, your teacher will contact you by webchat.
- Read assignment instructions and lesson content thoroughly before asking questions.
- Create a learning environment at your home. Remove distractions, organize your learning space, and find a spot that works for you.
- Track your progress. Use the tools in Canvas to monitor your learning. Read the feedback and suggestions given by your teachers. Be motivated to fix your mistakes to improve your grade, and increase your knowledge.
- Check into your courses every day.
- Plan on working in your courses 4 hours each day.
- Complete course activities at a 80% mastery grade.
- Complete quizzes at a 70% mastery grade.
Policies & Procedures
- Complete a minimum of 80% of the assigned work each week.
- If a student does not complete 80% of their work within a week, the student, parent and teacher will discuss the issues preventing work completion. A learning contract could be created to help the student.
- If a student is failing or does not log in for 10 school days, the student can be unenrolled from Davis Digital Learning 7-8.
- Parents/Guardians are an integral part of success in Davis Digital Learning 7-8. Please be available for the hours your students works each day in their online courses.
- Teachers are part time and have 24 hours or 1 business day to respond to your messages. Please be aware that if you message them later on in the day or evening it is very unlikely to receive a response that day. Please be courteous and respectful when messaging them.
Course Activities
- Instruction: Each Module has reading material, videos or other instruction. Make sure to view all of this information before starting an assignment.
- Assignments: There are assignments in each module designed to help you have a better understanding of the course concepts.
- Discussions: Replies must be 2-3 sentences minimum. Politeness and grammatical conventions must be followed
- Quizzes: In each module there is a test. These quizzes are multiple choice and short answer. They are to be completed online and help to check mastery of concepts being taught.
Late Work Policy
- Complete the course activities by the assigned due date if at all possible
- Complete the courses activities as soon as possible if a due date has been missed
- Your teacher will mark your assignment as a "1" if the due date has passed. You will still have the opportunity to complete your assignments, but this will allow you to view your most current grade.
Plagiarism
- If you directly copy work form the internet or another source, you will be given a "0" on the assignment and another chance to redo and fix your mistake. If the behavior continues, you can risk being removed from the program.
