Our class will be taking school pictures next Monday, September 23, at 10:50 a.m.

What We’re Learning This Week

In reading this week we will be finishing the Roald Dahl memor, Boy.  Students will then write an essay examining who caused the bigger problem in the story--the boys or the adults.  We will also start our first class novel, Hatchet.  Students will have a couple chapters to finish this week as assigned homework.  After that, they need to read certain sections of the book by the assigned date.  See the homework chart for more details.

This week in math we'll be starting a new unit on ratios.

In social studies we will be talking about the world's first written code of laws--The Code of Hammurabi.

In science we will continue learning about the reason for seasons--have your student explain why we have seasons!

Monday Packets

Just a reminder that students bring home graded work on Mondays.  I do not allow them to throw their work away or recycle their papers here at school.  Sometimes they tell me, "my parents don't care about my work."  I always assure them that of course they care!  Please make sure to ask your students for their graded work on Mondays.  I also hand out printed missing work lists along with the emails I sent out.  All missing assignments must be turned in by Friday to receive credit.  These work habits will help students immensely in junior high when they are keeping track of more classes and more assignments.

Today students are bringing home their first unit test in math.  I do allow students to make test corrections on tests and quizzes to improve their grade.  They can either rework the problems in a different colored pen OR rework the problems on paper and attach it to the test.  I will regrade their test awarding some points for the corrected problems.

Independent Reading

I cannot stress enough the importance of independent reading!  I expect my students to read at least 100 minutes at home.  Sixth graders should be reading a chapter book at their independent reading level. By this point in the year, they should have finished at least one book!  Reading is the NUMBER ONE way for a student to improve academically.  Please continue to encourage their independent reading at home.  I’m happy to help students find a great book!  The September book report is due on September 30.  They just need to fill out the "one pager" where they are writing a brief summary of the story.  They should have this yellow paper in their homework folder.
