What We’re Learning This Week

This week in language arts we'll be starting Unit C in our Amplify ELA program.  The topic of this unit is chocolate.  We will be reading all sorts of small articles--both fiction and nonfiction--about chocolate.  We will also be learning about digitial literacy and will be doing some research to create a small digital research product.  

We will also be finishing The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe this week.  Reading novels allows us to delve into plot structure and character development.  Students will continue to have a chapter to read each night for homework.  They also need to fill out the comprehension packet as they read.  Packets will be due on Wednesday, December 11.  We will be watching the movie as our holiday party on December 20.  STUDENTS NEED TO HAVE THE PACKET COMPLETELY FILLED OUT TO WATCH THE MOVIE WITH THE CLASS.

Our writing assignment this week will be an essay answering the Document-Based Question, "Was the Ancient Great Wall of China worth the cost?"

In math we'll be practicing dividing fractions.  We have learned 2 different algorithms--the common denominator algorithm and the invert and multiply algorithm.  We will also learn how to cross simplify to make the problems easier to solve.

In social studies, we will start learning about the world's five largest religions.

And in science, we'll be finishing up our unit on how heat affects matter.  Sometime this week (depending on the weather), we will be creating and launching six-foot balloons made out of tissue paper.

December Field Trips

This month we have 2 field trips.  On Tuesday, December 17, we will be going to Capitol Theater to see The Nutracker.  We would love for the students to dress up for the ballet.  And on Thursday, December 19, we will be traveling by bus to Millcreek Junior High for the band/orchestra Christmas "Cookie" Concert.  Please sign and return the green permission slip that is coming home today.

Holiday Party
