What We’re Learning This Week

This week in language arts we’ll be finishing the story of Odysseus and writing an essay on the role of pride in Greek Myths.  Students will also be starting a new novel, A Long Walk to Water.  This books combines both a real and fictional story about the Lost Boys of Sudan and the need for water in African villages.  The students always love how the two stories combine in the end.  They will have a reading assignment each night and need to answer the questions in their packet as well.

In math we'll be learning more about algebraic expressions.

This week in science we'll start learning about the causes of weather such as fronts and high/low pressure.

In social studies, we will be focusing on Ancient Rome.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is Friday.  We will be celebrating with a valentine exchange and some party games in class.  Students may bring valentines to exchange with their classmates.  I will provide a bag and some decorations, so there is no need for students to bring a special box from home.  We have 26 students in our class. Please note: Bringing valentines to exchange is completely optional.  If students choose to participate, they need to bring a valentine for every student in class.  They should not bring special valentines for individual classmates.

Learning to Breathe

Here's information from our instructor:

Dear Parent,
Last Tuesday we met for our third Learning to Breathe class.
We began with a brief opening mindfulness practice, reviewed theme B from last two weeks, and introduced a new theme:
R-Reflections (thoughts): Thoughts Are Just Thoughts
This week you will find it helpful to turn to the R section of the parent handbook and find a summary of the concepts as well as suggestions for home practice. The principles taught in the R theme can be very helpful in supporting children (and ourselves) when experiencing “sticky” thoughts (such as worry, self-criticism, comparison, etc.).
Please reach out with any questions.
