Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice

Course Description:

This course prepares individuals to perform the duties of police and public security officers,
including patrol and investigative activities, traffic control, crowd control, public relations,
witness interviewing, evidence collection and management, court procedures and the law in
general. Basic crime prevention methods, weapon and equipment operation, equipment
maintenance, and other routine law enforcement responsibilities are also included.

Course Objectives:

  • Students will be able to understand law enforcement history, crime awareness, and causes of
    crime.
  • Students will be able to understand the law, criminal justice system, and trial proceedings.
  • Students will be able to understand the corrections system and juvenile justice.
  • Students will be able to understand procedures relating to traffic investigations and evidence
    collecting and handling.
  • Students will be able to understand patrol tactics and investigative work.
  • Students will understand the importance of career readiness skills as it relates to the
    workplace.

Assignments and Tests:

This class is meant to be an introduction to the career field of law enforcement and is designed to be interactive and conversational.  Opinions, ideas, and thoughts about the history, present state, and future of policing and law enforcement are the basis to the success of this class.  There will be a WEEKLY  ASSIGNMENT.  This assignment will consist of writing a short answer to the question for the week.  In order to receive full credit (10 pts.) your answer must be at least 250 words.  Grammar and spelling will not be part of your grade but please be thoughtful and present an answer that you would be proud of.  All weekly assignments are due by the following Tuesday before midnight.

At the end of the course students will take a Final Exam (100 pts).  It will consist of multiple choice questions.

During the semester there may be opportunities for extra credit but that is not a guarantee.

How to Get a Good Grade?

-Pay attention to current events.

-Study the assigned readings before class.

-Participate in discussions during class.

-Ask questions!!!!!

-Complete Assignments on discussion board.

Grades will be given using the following total earned scores.

Late Work:  This class is point based, each day an assignment is late 1 point will be taken off.

  1. Discussion Board 10pts. x 15 = 150 pts.
  2. Final Exam 100 pts.
